Sambal

Looking for sambal with real flavour and serious heat? At Heatsupply you’ll find a small, carefully selected range of sambals that we’d want to eat ourselves: bold, intense and anything but ordinary. Pick your favourite and make your noodles, rice, sandwich or BBQ a whole lot more interesting in just one spoonful.

Our sambal range (small, but spot on)

We don’t do twenty variations that all taste the same. We’d rather pick a handful of sambals that stand out in flavour, ingredients and impact. That makes choosing easier — and you’ll end up with a jar you actually love.

Every sambal is selected on flavour and balance. So they work perfectly as a topping, dip or instant upgrade. Not just on heat alone.

Why our sambals (and not the standard supermarket jar)?

Supermarket sambal is often flat: lots of salt, sugar and not much character. Our selection is made for people who use sambal as a flavour booster, not an afterthought. Expect deep chili flavour, a real kick and sambals that truly finish your dish.

Take Mama Yu’s sambal — it has a genuinely prawn-like flavour thanks to the shrimp paste and dried shrimp. On the other end, the Sambal by Per de Man is a real toko-style sambal. Spicy from the Lombok and Rawit peppers, sweet from the onion and sugar, and fresh from the lime leaf, lemongrass and ginger. Perfect for lifting a curry. If you’re into Asian cuisine and love those deeper umami flavours, the Tomasu sambal is exactly what you’re looking for. The soy sauce in it really comes into its own.

The hottest sambal in our range

For the real heat lovers, the Fil Habanero Shatta is currently the hottest in our range. This fiery sambal is made with Habanero chili peppers and delivers an intense, direct heat that’ll surprise even seasoned sambal fans. Perfect if you’re up for a real challenge!

The sambal by Perry de Man

Of course, ‘De Sambal’ by Perry de Man is one that can’t be left off this list. We produced this sambal together with Per de Man, based on his own toko recipe. It’s only just launched but it’s already one of our bestsellers. Curious about the flavours? Check out ‘De Sambal’ right here.

FAQ

What do I use sambal for?

As a topping on noodles or rice, with your curry, stirred through mayo for a great dip, on eggs, with dumplings or as a finishing touch on sandwiches.

How do I store sambal?

Seal it well after opening and store according to the label. Usually that means a cool, dark spot like the fridge. Tip: always use a clean spoon — it’ll keep it fresher for longer.

What’s the difference between sambal and hot sauce?

Sambal is thicker and has a chunkier texture than hot sauce. It often contains pieces of pepper and other ingredients, while hot sauce is usually liquid. Sambal originally comes from Indonesian cuisine and has a more complex flavour thanks to the addition of various herbs and spices. Want to know more about the differences between hot sauce and sambal? Read all about it here.

How long does sambal keep?

Unopened, a jar usually lasts 1–2 years. Once opened, you can keep it in the fridge for around 3–6 months. Always check the specific best-before date on the packaging, as this can vary by product.

Is all sambal vegan?

Not all sambals are vegan. Both De Sambal by Per de Man and the Tomasu Sambal are vegan. Always check the ingredient list if you’re looking for a plant-based option.

Is your sambal very spicy?

That varies. Check the heat indicator on the product page and if you’re not sure, it’s always better to start a little milder.
