Crispy Chilli Oil
Are you obsessed with heat AND crunch? Crispy chili oil (also known as chili crisp) is one of those condiments that adds warmth, umami and texture in just one spoonful. It’s way more than ‘just spicy oil’: you also get crispy bits of chili, garlic and often onion or spices. That’s why it works not only as a flavour boost, but also as a topping.
Crispy chili oil is hugely popular because it instantly takes dishes to the next level with more flavour and heat. It’s super versatile, you can use it on pretty much everything and it comes in loads of varieties. From mild to extra hot.
FAQ
What is crispy chili oil?
Crispy chili oil is a spicy oil packed with crispy bits (usually chili, garlic and/or onion) and spices. You use it as a condiment and topping for extra heat, aroma and crunch.
What’s the difference between chili oil and crispy chili oil?
Chili oil is mainly oil infused with chili: usually liquid and smooth. Crispy chili oil also contains crispy solid bits (the ‘crisp’), giving you that amazing texture too.
What can you put crispy chili oil on?
On almost anything where you want heat and crunch: eggs, avocado toast, rice, noodles, dumplings, soup, vegetables, pizza, salads, tofu, chicken, fish.
Which dishes go well with crispy chili oil?
Pretty much anything you want to add some heat and crunch to. Noodle dishes (ramen, udon, wok noodles), rice bowls, dumplings, fried rice, stir-fried vegetables, cucumber salad, tofu-based dishes, soups and broths, eggs, a burger or on your sandwich with cheese.
Do you add it during cooking or afterwards?
Both. Use it afterwards (as a topping/finisher) for maximum flavour and crunch. During cooking works too. You can use it as a substitute for sunflower oil or olive oil when frying, for example. It will be less crispy that way though.
How long does crispy chili oil keep?
Unopened: often months to a year (check the label). Opened: usually a few months if you use it cleanly and store it properly. Does it smell rancid or taste ‘off’? Then toss it.
Does crispy chili oil need to be refrigerated?
Not required, but storing it cool and dark is definitely smart. In the fridge the oil may solidify; that’s totally normal and it returns to liquid at room temperature.
How do you store an opened jar?
Seal it well, keep things clean (always use a clean, dry spoon), and store it in a cool, dark place. Avoid getting water or food residue into the jar.
Is crispy chili oil the same as chili crisp?
In practice: yes, pretty much. ‘Chili crisp’ is the well-known name for crispy chili oil with crispy bits. Some brands use the names interchangeably, but the idea is the same: oil + crunch + chili/garlic/spices.
